The salmon run at this time of year makes for really interesting pictures and stories. A visit to the town of Kenai (pronounced keen-eye) on the Kenai Peninsular produced an insight into this amazing way to fish, whether from a boat or on the estuary beach.

You get a 4 foot round net on the end of a long pole and just hold it in the water and wait for the salmon to run by and bingo, there’s supper. But there is a catch (pun?) You have to be an Alaska resident and the number you can take depends on the size of your family present at the fishing. I spoke to a fisherman wh had camped with his wife, two adult children, their kids and they were allowed 45 salmon in the two week period they could fish.

As the pictures show, the various methods in boats and on the beach, and the general community. It is a fascinating episode.
